Rediscovering the Kingdom of God: Jesus’ Original Vision vs. the Modern Church

The Kingdom of God is within

When Jesus spoke about the Kingdom of God, He wasn’t talking about a distant, ethereal paradise alone. He revealed a Kingdom that is present, personal, and transformative. Sadly, over centuries, institutionalization has often distorted His vision. Here’s how we can reconnect to it.

Jesus’ Vision of the Kingdom of God

  • Internal, not external

    • Bible reference: “The kingdom of God is not coming with signs to be observed; nor will they say, ‘Look, here it is!’ or ‘There!’ for behold, the kingdom of God is in the midst of you.” (Luke 17:20–21)

    • Jesus taught that God’s Kingdom is not just external rituals or ceremonies—it lives within each of us.

  • Accessible to all

    • Bible reference: “Truly I tell you, whoever does not receive the kingdom of God like a little child will never enter it.” (Mark 10:15)

    • The Kingdom opens to the humble and sincere, not the proud or entitled.

  • Reversal of worldly values

    • Bible reference: “Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.” (Matthew 5:3)

    • Jesus consistently valued humility, mercy, and spiritual awareness over wealth, power, or status.

  • Immediate and ongoing

    • Bible reference: “Seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be added to you.” (Matthew 6:33)

    • The Kingdom is not only a future promise; it’s present and can guide every choice we make.

  • Mystical and experiential

    • Bible reference: “When you pray, go into your room and shut the door and pray to your Father who is in secret. And your Father who sees in secret will reward you.” (Matthew 6:6)

    • Direct, personal experience of God is central to entering the Kingdom.

How Contemporary Church Has Strayed

  1. Focus on external ritual over inner transformation

    • Jesus said: “Woe to you, teachers of the law and Pharisees, you hypocrites! You clean the outside of the cup and dish, but inside they are full of greed and self-indulgence.” (Matthew 23:25)

  2. Prosperity and power theology

    • Jesus warned: “It is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich person to enter the kingdom of God.” (Mark 10:25)

  3. Overemphasis on dogma

    • Jesus emphasized love over rules: “You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart…and your neighbor as yourself. On these two commandments depend all the Law and the Prophets.” (Matthew 22:37–40)

  4. Fear-based teachings

    • The Kingdom invites trust and love, not terror: “Fear not, little flock, for it is your Father’s good pleasure to give you the kingdom.” (Luke 12:32)

  5. Neglect of mystical practice

    • Jesus valued contemplation and solitude: “And after he had dismissed the crowds, he went up on the mountain by himself to pray.” (Matthew 14:23)

The Correct Perspective of the Kingdom of God

  • Texts (like the Gospel of Thomas) emphasized the Kingdom as inner realization: “The Kingdom of God is inside you, and it is outside you. When you know yourselves, then you will be known, and you will understand that you are children of the living Father.”

  • These texts were historically removed from the Bible because they emphasized personal experience over institutional authority, yet they align with Jesus’ own teachings about the Kingdom within.

Exercises to Experience the Kingdom Within

  1. Silent Meditation – Focus inward for 10–15 minutes, inviting God’s presence.

    • Reference: Luke 5:16: “But Jesus often withdrew to lonely places and prayed.”

  2. Compassion Practice – Show kindness freely.

    • Reference: Matthew 25:40: “Truly I tell you, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me.”

  3. Inner Reflection Journaling – Explore moments of God’s presence and guidance.

  4. Contemplative Reading of the Gospels – Read slowly and meditate on how the words speak to your life.

  5. Self-Knowledge Exercises – Observe your thoughts and beliefs, seeking truth beyond inherited norms.

  6. Mindful Awareness in Daily Life – Notice beauty, synchronicity, and moments of grace.
